The three-pin XLR connector makes up 95% of the wiring used in sound systems and sound engineering. Its particularity is to have three wires to transmit a monophonic audio signal, where only two are needed in consumer Hi-Fi equipment: it is a symmetrical link, comprising hot spot, cold spot and mass. It is also suitable for digital signal transmission, in particular with the DMX standard for controlling stage lighting as well as with the AES3 standard (also noted AES / EBU) developed for digital audio signals.
